I’ve been saying this for a long time. Unfortunately, it’s been in conversations with friends and family in my little hometown. Ergo, let’s hear it from Mr. Sullivan:
The most effective tool we have to goad us into this is the high price of gasoline. Higher gas prices were tough for a while for many people, but they reduced oil consumption, made alternative fuels more viable and helped the planet. Now, alas, the price has plummeted – and all those good green things are vulnerable to collapse.
Another fortunate byproduct of this tax would be that the artificially low price of meat would go away, thereby removing the biggest incentive for people to consume it. That would be good for the environment, our economy, and our public health. Granted that it would be bad for big agribusiness, but, uh, who cares?
